NUNUKAN - The Nunukan Regency Government of North Kalimantan Province (Kaltara) together with the Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency (BP2MI), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Nunukan Regent, Asmin Laura Hafid, said the MoU signatories were to provide protection for Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) entering Malaysia through the Nunukan area.

"This agreement is to stop the practice of placing illegal PMIs by syndicates and mafias," he said, Wednesday, February 21.

In addition, his party will cooperate with BP2MI to improve the quality and competence of PMI protection in Nunukan Regency.

Moreover, the Nunukan Regency area is one of the entrances and exits of PMI to Malaysia.

"The Nunukan Regency Government is very interested and will ensure that migrant workers who will work in Malaysia have complied with the established procedures," he said.

"Then, the MoU that has been signed will be a commitment from BP2MI and the Nunukan Regency Government to ensure that migrant workers who depart from Nunukan Regency are in accordance with procedures, so that later they can work properly, safely and protect their rights," Laura continued.

Meanwhile, the Head of BP2MI, Benny Rhamdani, emphasized that the MoU will regulate PMI placement governance and efforts to combat placement syndicates from upstream to downstream continue to be carried out by his party.

"The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between BP2MI and the Regency Government ( Nunukan) and the Agreement between BP2MI and educational institutions and other institutions. This is proof of our concern for our fellow nation's children as well as about the importance of synergy," he said.

According to Benny, all stakeholders must work integrated and the state must not turn a blind eye or half-hearted in providing special services to Indonesian Migrant Workers. Benny is optimistic that if the government has a political will, Indonesian Migrant Workers will be kept away from difficulties.

''I am sure that through collaborative work changes in the governance of the placement of Indonesian Migrant Workers will occur. The government will be able to suppress and stop the practice of illegal placement carried out by syndicates and mafias," he concluded.
