Alert! 25 Provinces Will Be Hit By Heavy Rain Accompanied By Lightning Today

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned of the potential for heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds that fell at a number of points in 25 provinces in the country, Tuesday, February 20.

Based on the weather early warning on the BMKG website quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, February 20, heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds is predicted to fall at a number of points in Aceh Province, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Bengkulu, Jambi, South Sumatra.

Also the Bangka Belitung Islands, Lampung, Banten, West Java, Central Java, Special Region of Yogyakarta, East Java, and Bali.

Next, East Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, North Maluku, West Papua, and Papua.

In addition to heavy rain, BMKG also warns of the potential for rain that can be accompanied by lightning and strong winds to occur at a number of points in the provinces of DKI Jakarta, West Nusa Tenggara, South Kalimantan, and Maluku.

In line with this warning, BMKG appealed to the public to be aware of the potential for rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds that can occur at any time.

BMKG Deputy for Meteorology Guswanto explained that the potential for heavy rain arose due to the ex-tropical cyclone Lincoln which was observed in mainland Australia forming an elongated wind confluence area in the Timor Sea, Arafuru Sea, Carpentaria Bay, and northern Australia.

Then, the convergence area was observed extending in Aceh from the waters west of Bengkulu to West Sumatra, from East Java to Banten, north of North Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, from the southern waters of Bali to NTB, from Central Sulawesi to South Sulawesi, from Southeast Sulawesi to NTT, in Papua and West Papua.

"This condition is able to increase the potential growth of rain clouds around the ex-tropical cyclone Lincoln and along these convergence or confluence areas," he said.
