Courier Of 2 Kilograms Of Methamphetamine Sentenced To 19 Years In Prison At The Medan District Court

The panel of judges at the Medan District Court, North Sumatra sentenced the defendant Anwar, a resident of Pidie Regency, Aceh, in the case of being a courier for narcotics type methamphetamine weighing 1,988 grams or almost 2 kilograms.

"In addition, the defendant was fined Rp. 2 billion, subsidiary to six months in prison," said Chief Judge Nurmiati at the Medan District Court as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, January 23.

In its ruling, the panel of judges stated that the defendant was proven and guilty of violating Article 114 paragraph (2) of the Republic of Indonesia Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics.

"The aggravating thing is that the defendant's actions do not support the government's program in eradicating drugs," said Nurmiati.

Meanwhile, he said that mitigating the defendant was polite in the trial and had never been convicted.

After reading the verdict, the panel of judges gave the defendant a 7-day thinking period, the defendant's legal adviser and the public prosecutor to accept or appeal the decision.

This decision is lighter than the demands of the North Sumatra Attorney General's Office, Sri Delyanti, for 20 years in prison, a fine of Rp. 2 billion, subsidiary to one year.

The indictment revealed that on September 29, 2023, North Sumatra Regional Police (Polda) officers received information from the public that someone was carrying methamphetamine using air transportation from Kualanamu International Airport, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra.

Sri Delyanti continued on Friday, September 29, 2023, officers saw the defendant in the ticket examination. Then the team conducted a search that found seven packs of crystal methamphetamine weighing 1,988 grams.

"When the interrogation was carried out, the defendant admitted to belonging to Fahmi (in the investigation) who would be delivered to Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara," he said.

Sri Delyanti said the defendant would get Rp. 20 million if he had delivered the evidence to Lombok.
