JAKARTA - United States President Joe Biden said on Thursday the clashes between Iran and Pakistan this week indicated Iran was disliked in the region, when the White House said it did not want to see escalation in the region.

Pakistan launched an attack on separatist militants in Iran on Thursday, in retaliation two days after Tehran said it attacked another group's base in Pakistan.

"As you can see, Iran is not very preferred in the region and where it is going, we are working now. I don't know where it's going," President Biden said.

The United States has been locked in a 'trial' with Iran, for its support for the Houthi rebels in Yemen who have launched attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

White House national security spokesman John Kirby told reporters at Air Force One, as President Biden flew to North Carolina, Washington was closely monitoring the Iran-Pakistan clashes.

"We don't want to see a clear escalation in South and Central Asia. And we are in touch with our colleagues in Pakistan," Kirby said.

John Kirby added that the attack on Pakistan was another example of Iran's destabilizing behavior in the region.
