The Provincial Government (Pemprov) of West Sumatra (West Sumatra) has prepared steps to overcome the overflow of lindi water from the Payakumbuh Regional TPA which landslides so as not to pollute the environment.

"After the landslide [20 December 2023], we have ordered Assistant II of the West Sumatra Regional Secretariat to deploy a cross- OPD team to review and prepare short-term steps, one of which is to overcome overflowing water cylinders so as not to pollute the environment," said the Governor of West Sumatra, Mahyeldi in Padang, Wednesday, January 10, quoted by Antara.

He said that lindi water is a liquid produced from the exposure of rainwater in piles of waste that can pollute the environment because it contains concentrations of organic compounds and high inorganic compounds.

"Because this water can cause pollution, it is necessary to immediately overcome it. The team has gone to the field and has a rough calculation to overcome this problem," he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of the West Sumatra Environment Agency (DLH), Tasliatul Fuaddi, added that the teams that had dropped from the West Sumatra Provincial Government included the Cipta Karya and Spatial Planning Highways Service (BMCKTR), the Agriculture Service, BPBD and the West Sumatra Environment Agency.

"We have reviewed and have closed the results. In conclusion, for handling inundation of lindi water so as not to enter the river, a budget of around Rp. 7.3 billion is needed. This is just a quick estimate calculation," he said.

Then for the handling of springs in the landfill area of the Payakumbuh Regional TPA, a budget of around Rp. 500 million is also needed.

"We will report this to the governor as soon as possible," he said.

He said that the work on handling lindi water and springs will likely be carried out by the BMCKTR Office in accordance with the technical specifications of the OPD.

However, he cannot confirm when the work can be carried out because there is a mechanism that must be followed according to the law, but it is hoped that by the end of February or March the process can begin.

The Payakumbuh Regional TPA accommodates garbage from four regencies and cities, respectively, the City of Bukittinggi, Payakumbuh, Agam Regency and Limapuluh Kota.

The TPA has experienced landslides several times and has been closed. Currently, the condition is overcapacity and is planned to be closed on January 1, 2024.

However, on December 20, 2023, the Regional TPA collapsed due to high rainfall in Payakumbuh, resulting in a number of community agricultural land being buried by garbage material.

It is also feared that the broken water from the TPA can pollute the surrounding environment.
