Needdem Asks KPU To Be Transparent And Maintain Election Integrity

JAKARTA - Executive Director of the Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem) Khoirunnisa Nur Agustyati said that the General Elections Commission (KPU) must meet at least four indicators to realize elections with integrity.

According to Khoirunnisa, the General Election's four indicators of integrity must be owned by the KPU so that the holding of elections has the trust and legitimacy of the public.

"There are at least four indicators, namely transparent, accountable, honest, and accurate," he said when contacted by ANTARA in Jakarta, Tuesday, December 26.

Khoirunnisa explained that transparency in every process carried out by the KPU, starting from before the voting day or the campaign period, then at the time of voting, until after the voting, will convince the public to accept any political processes carried out by the election organizers.

"Therefore, the KPU needs to be transparent about all election stage activities," he said.

Transparency, he said, would also prevent the emergence of disinformation, for example, such as allegations of ballots that had been submitted, such as a number of accusations in the 2019 election.

He also emphasized that other indicators, namely accountability, honesty, and accuracy, are no less important to be shown by the KPU, in order to produce quality elections and integrity.

He encouraged all of these indicators to be carried out, not only by the KPU, but also by the election supervisory agency, namely the Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu).

The day before, Monday (12/25), the leader of the Needdem also criticized the 2024 presidential election's second debate format which was held on Friday (22/12), which still places sympathizers and supporters behind the debated candidate pair (paslon).

"The previous debate notes are still about the format where there are still supporters behind the debated vice presidential candidate," he said.

According to Khoirunnisa, the existence of many supporters actually made the atmosphere at the debate site boisterous and seemed to be a place to show off the strengths of each candidate.
