A high-intensity heavy rain has flushed the Kebumen Regency, Central Java, since Saturday night, January 4, 2025, causing flooding in Sumberadi Village, Kebumen District, on Sunday morning, January 5.

Public Relations of BPBD Kebumen, Heri Purwanto, said that this flood occurred due to the overflow of the Kedung Really River after continuous rain since 23.00 WIB. River water overflowed to the point of submerging a number of residents' houses and the Somalangu Islamic Boarding School environment located in RT 01 RW 05 Sumberadi Village.

"The locations affected by the flood include RT 01 RW 05 Sumberadi Village, Bojong Hamlet RT 01 RW 02, and Somalangu Islamic Boarding School with around 2,200 students affected," Heri said on Sunday, January 5.

According to Heri, the water level in the location varies from 50 to 200 cm. The students at the Somalangu Islamic Boarding School have been evacuated to the second floor to avoid puddles.

Floods also caused damage to facilities in Islamic boarding schools, including school equipment and other important items that were submerged in water. BPBD Kebumen together with volunteers and local residents have taken various emergency steps to deal with the situation.

"We have evacuated students and residents to safer places, as well as coordinated for the distribution of logistical assistance. The team also helped save important items belonging to residents and Islamic boarding schools," explained Heri.

Heri added that the process of collecting data on losses due to flooding is still ongoing. He also appealed to the public to remain vigilant, given the high intensity of rain in this rainy season.

"We continue to collect data and will update information according to developments in the field. We urge the public to remain alert to potential flooding, especially in the rainy season like now," he concluded.
