UN: Myanmar's Internal Conflict Extends, More And More People Are Displaced

JAKARTA - The United Nations (UN) gave an internal conflict warning in North Myanmar has expanded and made more and more people displaced.

The UN office to coordinate humanitarian affairs (Unocha) said the battle in Southeast Asian countries had increased since the end of October, and expanded from the northern Shan State to the Rakhine State, as well as in the northwest and southeast.

In a statement released Tuesday (5/12), Unocha said "More than half a million people became new internal refugees due to violence. This number exceeded two million people who had become internal refugees."

Reported by Antara, Wednesday, December 6, to meet their needs, the Chairman of the UN Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths allocated 7 million US dollars (around IDR 108.5 billion) from the Central Emergency Response Fund (Cerf) to help civilians who were displaced due to the conflict that took place in Myanmar."

However, he continued, from the humanitarian response plan worth 887 million dollars (IDR 13.7 trillion) for this year, until now only obtained around a third, which is 254 million dollars (IDR 3.9 trillion).

"Additional assistance is needed to enable humanitarian institutions to respond to the needs that are increasing effectively and on a large scale. Cerf funding will help humanitarian organizations provide life savior assistance for those whose lives are uprooted due to conflict," the statement said.

Three armed ethnic groups, united in a group called the Brotherhood Alliance, combated the Junta regime to take control of the region, while China had tried to immediately stop the attack.

The group attacked the Junta troops, who ruled in the majority of the Buddhist Southeast Asian countries. They have won half a dozen city and have now controlled more than 170 front posts.

Many people were reported dead in the attack.

China and India have responded carefully to the ongoing conflict. Beijing has banned its citizens from traveling to the region and also helps evacuate many foreigners who are trapped during the battle.
