Komnas Regrets That Women's Representation In The 2024 Election Is Not 30 Percent Yet

JAKARTA - The National Commission (Komnas) for Women regrets that there have been no significant steps from general election organizers (elections) to accommodate women's representation of 30 percent in the general election (elections) for legislative members.

"The Supreme Court has received a lawsuit from civil society so that the General Election Commission (KPU) ensures that there is a quota of 30 percent (women's legislative members), but in practice we see that there have been no significant steps from election organizers to accommodate the quota," said Chairman of the National Commission for Women's Participation Sub-Commission Veryanto Sitohang as reported by ANTARA, Friday, November 24.

Veryanto emphasized that so far Komnas Perempuan has continued to oversee women's issues in politics, for example when civil society conducted judicial testing to the Supreme Court regarding the 30 percent quota, where at that time the KPU did not accommodate the quota, Komnas Perempuan was present to provideamicus theft, or as a friend of the judiciary.

"Then the civil society brought this issue back when reporting the KPU to the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), and Komnas Perempuan was also present as an expert to convey the urgency of 30 percent of women as an absolute requirement, so we just have to wait, hope that the KPU can follow up and carry out the decision from the Supreme Court to ensure that the 30 percent quota can be realized," he said.

He emphasized that if the stages have not been completed, his party still hopes that election organizers will immediately order political parties to realize the 30 percent quota.

"For Komnas Perempuan this is important, because women's leadership in politics is one of the factors to increase efforts to eliminate violence against women," he said.

Komnas Perempuan also believes that women's leadership is able to answer the big challenges faced by the Indonesian people, and this can only be realized through fulfilling the 30 percent quota.

Meanwhile, Komnas Perempuan Commissioner Tiasri Wiandani said that so far her party has interpreted women's leadership as one of the strategies to actively involve women in policy making.

"We interpret women's leadership as one of the strategies, women are no longer placed in people who are subject to policies, but are actively involved in policy making so that the formulation of the 30 percent quota for women is an effort to ensure women's roles in policy making," said Tias.

He emphasized that this representation is important to voice issues of women and women's rights, considering that the current regulatory practices still do not meet the protection of women's rights.

"Although in our constitution the regulation on the fulfillment of the protection of human rights and women already exists, but in practice policy regulations, it is still minimal to ensure how the content of policy substance is to fulfill the protection of women's rights," he explained.

Therefore, he continued, the impetus for women involved in policy-making positions, especially in political contestation for a quota of 30 percent, is very important.

"This must be done by the KPU as the organizer of the election, because it is already in the rules regarding the Election Law, it has mandated that this 30 percent quota can be realized, therefore Komnas Perempuan together with civil society ensures that they continue to oversee how the implementation of the women's representative quota in the election," he said.
