JAKARTA - A 12-year-old boy shot two masked intruders who entered his grandmother's house before 1 a.m on Saturday, February 13 local time in Goldsboro, North Carolina, United States.
The intruders had demanded money from 73-year-old Linda Ellis and then shot her, police said in a statement posted on the Goldsboro Police Department Facebook page, as reported by CNN.
Police said the teenager shot "in self-defense" on the suspect who then fled. Officers found one of the suspects, 19-year-old Khalil Herring, at an intersection near Ellis' house, suffering from a gunshot wound.
"Initial evidence suggests that Khalil Herring was one of two masked intruders and was shot during the robbery", police said.
Both Ellis and Herring were transported to Wayne UNC Health Care in Goldsboro for treatment. Herring was later pronounced dead. Ellis, the teenager's grandmother, was treated for a non-life-threatening injury and is currently in stable condition, according to Police.
The charges against the 12-year-old, identified as a boy by CNN affiliate WTVD, will not be charged, according to a police statement.
When contacted by CNN, a spokesman for the Goldsboro Police did not want to provide any information about the second suspect in the attempted robbery.
Randolph Bunn, who said he was the teenager's great-uncle, told WTVD he was at home when the intruders broke in and one of them was armed.
"(The intruder) just shot his grandmother. He (the intruder) was going to shoot him too, he was going to shoot me too, he was going to kill us all", Randolph Bunn told WTVD.
Chiquita Coley, identified by CNN WRAL affiliate as Ellis's niece, said she could not believe what had happened.
"Why would someone come to her house and do this? This has to stop", said Coley".I don't know what they're thinking around here in Goldsboro, but it has to stop", she hoped.
