Monkeypox Transmission Is Slower Than Waterpox

JAKARTA - A specialist in dermatology and veneology from Dr. Moewardi Hospital, dr. Prasetyadi Mawardi, Sp.KK(K), FINSDV, FAADV said the propagation ofmonkeypox(monpockets) was relatively slow, so it was different from the chili pox (waterpox) which was very fast and sporadic.

Prasetyadi, who now serves as Head of Division II of Education and Profession of the Association of Skin and Gender Specialists (Perdoski), assesses that the public does not need to worry about the emergence of cases of monkeypox because the risk of disease transmission is not large.

"In order not to cause public concern, it needs to be explained that even though it is called an infectious disease, the risk of transmission ofmonkeypox is not easy," Prasetyadi said as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, October 27. "In addition, the death rate due to monkeypox orpox disease is also relatively low, not even up to 1 percent," he said.

If someone has monkeypox, however, has good immunity (immunocompetent), then the person can recover himself. Therefore, the spread of monkeypox is very dependent on the immune system in the community," he said.

Prasetyadi also highlighted that all cases of monkeypox recorded in Indonesia currently are cases of local transmission, most of which are in Jakarta.

Previously, the Directorate General of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) of the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) stated that there were 14 active cases of monkeypox in Indonesia as of Thursday (26/10).

In addition to a number of confirmed cases, the Ministry of Health also revealed that there were 17 negative cases or discarded, two cases that were still probable and needed further tests, as well as nine suspects.

Meanwhile, recipients of the monkeypox vaccine to the same period have reached 157 people or 31.72 percent of the total target of 477 people.
