PADANG - Andalas University (Unand) West Sumatra has the opportunity to get royalties of IDR 3-4 billion as a result of the innovation of ink manufacturing for the 2024 Simultaneous General Elections (Pemilu) in collaboration with PT Kudo.
"About 15 to 20 percent of royalties go to Unand from the gross price of simultaneous election ink procurement," said Director of Unand Research Cooperation and Downstream Dr Eng Muhammad Makky in Padang as reported by ANTARA, Friday, October 27.
When the ink tender was carried out, the oldest university outside Java managed to get a 60 percent allocation of election ink nationally.
That figure is relatively high because initially Unand only targeted around 10 percent.
Makky explained that Unand's innovative election ink in collaboration with PT Kudo has a high level of domestic components (TKD), reaching 90 percent.
"So, raw materials and so on 90 percent are made domestically," he said.
In addition to having high TKD, the price of election ink produced by innovation of the nation's children is also cheaper when compared to ink using imported raw materials.
The difference or price difference is due to 90 percent of raw materials originating from within the country, especially gambir collected from farmers in West Sumatra Province.

By producing election ink using a gambir from Minang, Unand and related parties have indirectly helped the downstream process of gambir plants imported to India.
Unand Chancellor Prof. Yuliandri said that until now the university had produced at least 18 innovation technologies from gambir raw materials, especially "marker" (colorer) compounds for the needs of various industries, including election ink.
Prof. Yuliandri explained, most of the color substances needed by domestic industries are still imported with a total of 42,000 tons per year.
