Jokowi Tells The Story Of Once Withdrawing 3,300 Complicated Regional Regulations, Convoluted But Losing When Sued

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo said that he had revoked 3,300 regional regulations (perda) because they regulate complicated bureaucracy. Unfortunately, the revocation of the regulation lost after being sued. "I once revoked 3,300 local regulations. Already withdrawn, (I) conveyed it to the Minister of Home Affairs, withdraw it. Yes, sir, we revoke it. Through studies, through calculations, withdraw. There were no three months, being sued in court. Losing, losing," Jokowi said at the 2023 National Working Meeting of the Indonesian Civil Service Corps (Korpri) in Jakarta, reported by Antara, Tuesday, October 3. Jokowi revealed that the complicated and convoluted bureaucratic procedure system has been implemented in Indonesia for decades. Therefore, he once revoked thousands of local regulations which he said were too many less efficient rules. According to Jokowi, convoluted procedures must be improved, especially since regional regulations regulate the government bureaucracy at the provincial, district and city levels. In the National Working Meeting, Jokowi said that Korpri members had reached 4.4 million employees. He considered that the number was very large and became a determining force for the nation's progress. Jokowi likens Korpri to a vehicle, while the bureaucracy is its engine. "We need machines with strong power, efficient ones, which do not cause wasteful gasoline, which is not immediately hot, not easily hot, fast but cool; what is needed now," said Jokowi.

He also wants the work ecosystem of the state civil apparatus (ASN) to be able to spur others to perform, excel, and innovate.
