JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) has reorganized the Jokowi-Iriana Park area in Kaimana Regency, West Papua, to make it more optimal as a public open space.

The Ministry of PUPR has also reorganized Jusuf Kalla Park in Kaimana, West Papua, to increase its appeal as a place for futsal and culinary sports activities.

PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono in a statement received in Jakarta, Thursday, said that infrastructure support in the two parks is expected to be able to create a public space arrangement that is in accordance with local characteristics and wisdom of regional culture to attract tourists.

"For tourism, first, the infrastructure must be improved, then amenities and events, then massive promotions. If that's not ready, tourists come once and will not come again. That's what we have to take care of right," said Basuki Hadimuljono as quoted by Antara, Thursday, September 28.

The arrangement of the Jokowi-Iriana Park and Jusuf Kalla Park areas, said Basuki, is the optimization of public open spaces that have previously been built by presenting public open space facilities that are safe and comfortable for visitors, so as to improve the economy of the local community, especially the tourism sector.

Jokowi-Iriana Park is located on Jalan Trikora, Kaimana Kota Village with an area of 2.7 hectares, while Jusuf Kalla Park is on Jalan Utarom, Krooy Village with an area of 1.1 hectares. The arrangement of the two parks began to be carried out on April 13, 2023.

Basuki explained that there was a strong cultural touch on the concept of structuring Jokowi'Iriana Park which was inspired by the traditional Papuan musical instrument, namely Tifa. The musical instrument, which is known to come from the skin membrane of the animal, is implemented in the form of a monument in the main plaza area.

Jusuf Kalla Park is equipped with various sports facilities such as futsal fields, basketball courts, jogging tracks, prayer rooms, parking areas, kiosks and toilets. Public open spaces, said Basuki, are also the right places to diversify education and conservation facilities for the types of endemic plants of West Papua.

The arrangement of Jokowi-Iriana Park and Jusuf Kalla Park, said Basuki, is part of the arrangement of slum settlements aimed at improving the economy of the people around the area which is a green open space.

The balance of social, economic and environmental functions is a principle in the arrangement of this area so that the infrastructure that is built can provide benefits to its surroundings.
