DILI - Chairman of the House of Representatives' Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP), Dr. Fadli Zon was invited to be the mainnote speaker at the Seminar on International Relations and Democracy organized by the Timor Leste Parliament in Dili. On that occasion, the Deputy Chairperson of the Gerindra DPP delivered an explanation regarding the process of joining Timor Leste to ASEAN, reviewed from the point of view of Parliament.

Appearing as the first panelist, Dr. Fadli Zon underlined two things in his presentation. The first is about the Potential Contribution of Timor Leste to ASEAN, and the second is Advice on Steps that the Timor Leste Parliament can take, in order to support the implementation of the ASEAN Roadmap for Timor Leste's full membership.

The chairman of the BKSAP DPR RI is of the opinion that as a democratic country, Timor Leste has the potential to strengthen ASEAN, especially the organization's Sentrality in the Southeast Asia region.

"Timor Leste can support ASEAN in building regional architectures that are inclusive and keep ASEAN from becoming the main regional organization that is a reference for external parties in collaborating in the Southeast Asia region," said Fadli Zon.

Fadli Zon also explained further that the entry of Timor Leste into ASEAN is also a realization of ASEAN's ideals to become an inclusive organization, as stated in the 'ASEAN Charter'.

In his presentation before the Timor Leste Parliament, the Gerindra politician also gave advice on the next steps that could be implemented, to assist the process of entering Timor Leste into ASEAN, in accordance with the roadmap provided by ASEAN countries.

"The Timor Leste parliament can further actively build relations with other ASEAN state parliaments. This is important so that Timor Leste can be better known by other ASEAN countries, as well as to explore the possibilities of cooperation that can be mutually beneficial," said Fadli Zon, who is also a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives from Commission I.
