JAKARTA - The Japanese government decided to start disposing of radioactive waste water that had been processed from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the sea on August 24.

The preparation for the disposal of radioactive water was carried out by the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) which manages the Fukushima Daiichi PLTN.

"Japan will take as much action as possible to ensure the safety of the disposal of waste into the sea even after the disposal of the waste begins, and will not dispose of any waste that has a negative impact on health or the environment," the Japanese government said in a written statement by the embassy in Jakarta as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, August 23.

The Japanese government promised to continue to carry out three types of monitoring, namely monitoring of water processed in tanks, monitoring of real-time, and monitoring of marine areas in layers with the involvement of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

If there is a radioactivity rate exceeding the standard, then the Japanese government will take appropriate action, including not throwing away or stopping the release.

The IAEA will also continue to be independently involved. Furthermore, the results of Japanese government monitoring and TEPCO will also be published both domestically and internationally.

The Japanese government and TEPCO will continue to make every effort to ensure safe disposal, by continuing to involve the IAEA, including its review, the Japanese government said.

Regarding the safety of disposal of wastewater into the sea, Japan argued that it had referred to the IAEA report released last July that the plan to release wastewater into the sea was in accordance with international safety standards, so that the impact of radiation on humans and the environment could be ignored.

The Japanese government insists it will support the survival of local fishermen's livelihoods, continue to undergo an IAEA review, as well as strengthen, expand monitoring and dissemination of easily understood information about measurement results.
