Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees (MWA) of Andalas University (Unand) West Sumatra (West Sumatra) Prof. Werry Darta Taifur said the process of selecting the new rector of the college would be carried out directly by MWA.

"Unlike the previous election, the election for the new rector is Unand directly by MWA," he said in Padang as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, August 16.

The former Chancellor of Unanditu explained that the change in the electoral mechanism adjusted Unand's status change from the Public Service Agency (BLU) to a Legal Entity College (PTNBH).

"The new rector election was carried out by MWA and the results were final because it was a member of the MWA, including the Minister of Education and Culture," he said.

Not only that, the latest regulations also regulate the length of the rector's term of office, which was originally four years to five years.

"For the previous four years, the Unand Chancellor will currently be elected for the term of office, namely 2023-2028," said Werry Darta Taifur.

Previously, the Unand Chancellor election referred to the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture (Permendikbud). However, for the period of 2023-2028, it was referred to MWA Regulation Number 2 of 2023 concerning Procedures for Appointment, Inauguration and Dismissal of the Unand Chancellor. The regulation was ratified in the MWA Unand plenary meeting dated August 15, 2023.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of Unand's new rector election, Febrin Anas Ismail, said there were three major stages in the process of selecting the number one person in the oldest university outside Java.

The three stages are screening by Unand lecturers, screening from 69 members of the Unand Academic Senate (SAU), and finally the election and inauguration determined by MWA.

"Mendikbudristek has nine votes, while the other MWA members only have one voice. So, a total of 25 votes," he said.

Registration for the Unand Chancellor candidate will be held from September 1 to 21, 2023. Then the selection of candidates for September 21 to 23, the determination of candidates for September 29 and the determination of candidates for rectors on October 4.

Furthermore, the selection of rector candidates will be carried out on October 18, the determination of the candidate for October 20, the election for the rector on October 31 and November 24, 2023, is scheduled for the inauguration of the elected rector for the period 2023-2028.
