KPKP Service: Death Of 21 Cats In Sunter Jakut Not Due To Rabies

JAKARTA - Head of the DKI Jakarta Food, Maritime and Agriculture Security Service (KPKP) Suharini Eliawati revealed that the deaths of 21 cats in Sunter, North Jakarta, were not due to rabies.

"The results are for rabies PCR, thank God the results are negative," said Suharini at DKI City Hall, Central Jakarta, as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, July 18.

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov) through the DKI Jakarta KPKP Service together with the Subang Veterinary Village are conducting further investigations by taking brain samples to find out more about the causes of death of the cats.

Based on the results of the examination of the first sample, the condition of the cat's stomach was empty and deworming, not due to poisoning. On the other hand, several cats that died were indicated to be malnourished.

"We can tell at that time that the internal organs were in normal condition. So it means that at that time rumors were being poisoned, it didn't exist, it wasn't proven," he said.

Tapilambung is empty and there are worms. "So there are indeed some cats that are malnourished," said Suharini.

However, Suharini said malnutrition was not the cause of simultaneous and sudden death of dozens of cats in Sunter, but only caused a decrease in endurance so that it was prone to infection with disease.

Previously circulated on the Instagram account @seputar.sunter, a number of videos of cats lying on the road. The cat had a seizure before finally dying.

Not only street cats roaming the Sunter, but there are also pet cats that are reported to have died in similar conditions.

Responding to this, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government through the KPKP Office investigated the case of the death of 21 cats in Sunter Agung, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, since July 6, 2023.

Officers brought the dead cat samples for necropsy and pathological examinations at the laboratory of the Animal and Livestock Health Service Center.
