Indian Customs Confiscates 7.8 Kilograms Of Gold Trying To Be Smuggled From Dubai In The Last Two Weeks

JAKARTA - India's Customs Authority managed to thwart an attempt to smuggle about 7.8 kilograms of gold from Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) on two separate occasions in the past two weeks.

Three Indian citizens on a flight from Dubai were arrested in New Delhi, India after trying to smuggle nearly $337,000 worth of gold into the country.

Customs officers confiscated 6.5 kilograms of gold bullion at Indira Gandhi International Airport and uploaded pictures of the captured images on Thursday.

By smuggling gold bars on an unnamed flight from Dubai, the three suspects hope to save about $35,000 in tax form, reported inte July 6.

Airport officials regularly find gold from passengers hoping to avoid payment of import duties. The latest arrests are less than two weeks away from previous arrests.

On June 24, the same airport team found 1.3 kg of gold worth about $85,000 from an Indian passenger, who also arrived from Dubai.

The man hid three gold bars in his clothes. Officers arrested him on landing after profiling passengers.

Last March, a gold bar wrapped in a deposit and hidden under an aircraft toilet sink, was found on a flight from Dubai to India.

Customs officers at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi rushed to action, after information was made to inspect the aircraft's bathroom upon arrival.

A video shows customs officers searching the sink cavity in the toilet and finding four gold bars stored inside.

However, the Indian authorities did not name the airline where the gold bullion was found.

It is known, although there is no cost for the amount of gold exportable from Dubai, India imposes a 10.5 percent tax on goods and services for every pure gold imported into the country.
