YOGYAKARTA - What will happen to Jakarta after not becoming the capital in 2024? Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono gave his answer or opinion regarding this question when he became inspector of the 496th anniversary ceremony in Jakarta. According to Heru, Jakarta will transform into a global city that has a role in the global economic network.

"After (not) holding the status of the nation's capital, Jakarta will transform into a global city that acts as the main node in the world's economic network. Jakarta has a direct and real impact on social affairs, the global economy," said Heru Budi Hartono in the Monas area, Central Jakarta, Thursday (22/6).

A similar answer has also been conveyed by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani. So far, the movement and economic nodes in Indonesia are concentrated on the island of Java, especially in the city of Jakarta. Heru Budi Hartono said Jakarta will continue to strive to become a tough city. At the age of 496 years, Jakarta is predicted to be equal to developed cities in the world. Until now, Jakarta has often hosted various international events.

"Jakarta is currently preparing to host the ASEAN Summit which will take place in August and September as part of the ASEAN Indonesia 2023 meeting series," said Heru.

In the agenda of moving the capital to the IKN area in North Penajam Paser Regency, East Kalimantan, President Jokowi already has a design for DKI Jakarta in the future. Jakarta will be used as a business city, economic center, and tourism even though it no longer holds the status of the capital of Indonesia.

"Jakarta itself is already very congested, very congested. But we will continue to repair Jakarta and become a business city, a tourism city, an economic city," said President Jokowi at the Opening of the XVIII PP Muhammadiyah Youth Congress in 2023, last Thursday (23/2).

Jokowi also said that the Jakarta scheme as a business center and IKN as the capital has a concept with governments in other developed countries. The United States (US) owns New York City and Washington DC. Australia owns Melbourne and Sydney.

Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani also expressed a similar opinion about the fate of Jakarta after leaving the status of the capital. According to Sri Mulyani, the relocation of the capital did not necessarily dim Jakarta. Jakarta is considered to remain the center of economic growth for the country. However, he said that Jakarta must still be redesigned in order to be able to realize this hope.

"So thinking about Jakarta must also be redesigned. So that Jakarta will also continue to be called habitable and remains a strong center of economic growth for Indonesia," Sri Mulyani said at the Workshop Recycling and Management of State Assets, last Sunday (11/12/2022).

The Minister of Finance also reminded that do not only see Jakarta as the place where government buildings are built. He emphasized more the impact of the City of Jakarta when he was the center of government.

"The new capital city will continue to be developed while ensuring that Jakarta is not later abandoned and becomes less valuable. Because like it or not, again, even today because the focus of the Directorate General of State Assets may be more on government assets. But basically when talking about Jakarta, this is not only about government buildings, but government activities that attract many other links or multipliers that should not be underestimated," said Sri Mulyani.
