2 United Generals In Sudan Soon To Negotiate

JAKARTA - Sudan's military commander General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and paramilitary commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo agreed to hold a meeting in the coming two weeks.

"We agree with the mediators to hold a meeting between al-Burhan and Hemedti in the next two weeks," said deputy chairman of the Sudan Malik Sovereignty Council to Al Jazeera television as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, June 15.

He said the meeting of the two rival generals would discuss a ceasefire and access to humanitarian aid.

However, in order not to explain further about the planned meeting.

On Monday (12/6), Kenyan President William Ruto said his country was committed to bringing together al-Burhan and Hemedti in an effort to end the conflict in Sudan.

According to Agar, al-Burhan said he was willing to negotiate to end the conflict.

"He has no conditions to start negotiations," said Agar.

Dagalo, known as Hemedti, was deputy leader of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, before being sacked by al-Burhan amid tensions over the integration of paramilitary groups into the armed forces.

Paramilitary integration into Sudan's armed forces is the main requirement of Sudan's transitional agreement with political groups.

Sudan does not have a government that has served since October 2021 when the military dissolved Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok's transitional government and declared a state of emergency, which by political forces was called a coup.

The transition period, which began in August 2019 after President Omar al-Bashir was ousted, will initially end with elections in early 2024.

Since the outbreak of the conflict between the military and RSF on April 15, 2023, nearly 1,000 people have died and thousands more have been injured.

The conflict was sparked by the absence of an agreement in recent months between the two parties regarding the integration of the RSF into the armed forces.
