DENPASAR - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin said that the mass media, especially in the broadcasting sector, must be able to adapt in the midst of an invasion of content in order to survive.

"The media's ability to adapt is in the midst of super tight competition and invasion of content that can trigger pluralism, determining the sustainability of the media," said Vice President Ma'ruf Amin in Nusa Dua, Bali as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, May 23.

The Vice President conveyed this when he opened the 18th High Level Conference (KTT) Media Se-Asia Pacific Year 2023 (The 18th Asia Media Summit 2023) on 22-25 May 2023 with the theme "Media Enhancing Economic Sustainability".

"In the digital world, consumers leave traces of data regarding content preferences, behavior, and consumer mindset. These data can be analyzed to produce favorable decisions for the media as well as meet consumer needs," said the Vice President.

The media, according to Vice President Ma'ruf, must be able to navigate changes due to digital expansion so that it can maintain and even increase the number of consumers.

"I believe that change is a necessity. We all have to move to adapt to the development of information technology and communication that changes rapidly," added the Vice President.

The vice president said the media industry was not free from the impact of the digital revolution.

"The sophistication of digital technology does not just create new models, but is even able to change the mindset and influence consumer behavior. Social media has made changes in news consumption even more drastic," said the Vice President.

The media, said the Vice President, are eyes and ears for people who function vitally as a source of information, ideas, education, entertainment, policies, and public issues that deserve the attention of policy makers.

"In the midst of the incessant global effort to realize sustainable development goals (SDGs), the role of the media is very strategic in increasing literacy at the individual, community and state institutions in order to build collective awareness," said the Vice President.

Thus, the media is expected to play a role in corrections to the country's policy architecture so that it continues to be on the right, fair and sided path to the community.

"Moreover, after the various crises that are intertwining like now, the media must be able to optimize its role as a distributor as well as a examiner of fresh ideas that can be a solution as well as build a paradigm of mutually beneficial collaboration," said the Vice President.

The 18th AMS is the annual activity of all broadcasting institutions in Asia Pacific to share ideas about broadcasting and information.

Decision makers, media professionals, scholars, and news and program stakeholders from Asia Pacific, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and North America will attend the annual conference.
