Finnish PM Sanna Marin Announces Divorce After 19 Years Together: We'll Remain Good Friends

JAKARTA - Outgoing Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin has filed for divorce with her husband Markus Raikkonen, according to an announcement on Instagram on Wednesday.

"We are grateful for the 19 years together and our beloved daughter. We will remain great friends," they said in separate Instagram stories, reported Reuters May 11.

Marin and Raikkonen, who until recently worked at a venture capital firm, have a 5-year-old daughter. They married in 2020 while Marin was in office and struggled with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have lived youth together, entered adulthood together and grown to be parents to our dear daughter together,” Marin wrote on Instagram after her August 2020 wedding to Raikkonen.

Marin and his Social Democratic Party lost to the right-wing National Coalition Party as well as the nationalist Finland Party in Finland's parliamentary elections last month.

The politician born on November 16, 1985, once the youngest prime minister in the world, currently taking office in 2019, is regarded by fans around the world as a millennial role model.

However, at home he has faced criticism for his government's partying habits and high public spending.

Marin's rise to the top of Finnish politics was swift. The first member of his family to attend university, he entered politics at the age of 20 and quickly rose through the ranks of the center-left Social Democratic Party. He was later appointed prime minister at the age of 34.
