JAKARTA - A number of areas in Indonesia have experienced natural disasters, one of which is flood. The overflow of the Krueng Baro Garo river with a high water surface intensity of up to 70 centimeters, submerging the area in Pidie District, Aceh Province.

At least, there are six sub-districts in Pidie Regency that were affected by the flood, including Dleima, Pidie, Padang Tiji, Mila, Glumpang Baro and Indrajaya Districts.

The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Pidie Regency noted that 14 housing units were submerged, 11,371 people were affected and 1,080 people were displaced.

One of the efforts that can be made to minimize losses due to floods is by implementing a mitigation strategy. But keep in mind, mitigation should be done before a disaster occurs.

Given that mitigation is an effort to reduce disaster risk, both through physical development as well as awareness and increased capacity to face disaster threats.

Quoted by VOI from the official BPBD website, mitigation strategies that can be practiced to minimize the risk of flood disasters include, among others, structuring river basins; Establish a flood warning and monitoring system.

"Do not build buildings on the riverbanks. Disposing of garbage in the trash and dredging the river and doing greening upstream of the river is a simple way to minimize flooding," quoted VOI, Tuesday, January 19.
