Burst Burst Barru, South Sulawesi: 1,149 Flood Inundation Houses, 4 Landslide-affected Districts

JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) noted that four sub-districts in Barru Regency, South Sulawesi (Sulsel) experienced floods and landslides due to heavy rain and strong winds.

Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Abdul Muhari said landslides, floods and strong winds began to occur at 10.15 WITA, Wednesday, February 15.

Based on a report from the BNPB Operations Control Center (Pusdalops), Abdul said, extreme weather in Barru Regency caused four houses and one mosque to be lightly damaged due to strong winds and road access to Datae Hamlet was covered by landslide material.

Meanwhile, 1,149 houses were flooded with water levels reaching 150 centimeters.

The four sub-districts affected by this incident include Siawung Village, Sepe'e Village, Tuwung, Mangempang and Coppo in Barru District; Balusu, Binuang and Lampoko villages and Takkalasi Villages in Balusu District.

Then, Pancana, Lalabata, litera-pao, Tellupanua, Lasitae, Lipukasi, Corowali and Tanete Villages in Tanete Rilau District; and Mattirowalie, Libureng, Lompo, Lempang, Kading and Lompo Riaja Villages in Tanete Riaja District.

Previously, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency issued an early warning as of February 14-16, 2023 regarding the potential for moderate to heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and lightning/lightning in most areas of South Sulawesi.

The inarisk study also shows that Barru Regency has the potential for floods, extreme weather, and landslides at a moderate to high level.

"Seeing these conditions, BNPB urges local governments to carry out regular inspections of the condition of billboards and cuts of tree branches in the vicinity of residential areas to anticipate the impact of strong winds and prepare evacuation plans to anticipate further disasters," said Abdul.
