Walhi Asks The Government To Prepare Climate Crisis Mitigation Policy

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Forum for the Environment (WALHI) sees the need for a policy umbrella that can be a reference for adaptation and mitigation movements in the face of the climate crisis.

"There are still many challenges in this movement because there is no Climate Change Law which can be a reference and policy umbrella for the actions taken to achieve the targets set," said WALHI National Executive Uslaini Chaus in the hydrometeorological Disaster Emergency webinar: Commitment to Implementation of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Policy, quoted by ANTARA, Thursday 9 February

WALHI considers it necessary to encourage the responsibility of business actors who contribute greatly to the CO2 emissions that trigger a climate crisis that has become a disaster for the world community, especially people on small islands, such as the Thousand Islands in Jakarta.

Such as by filing a lawsuit with representatives of the community affected by the climate crisis on Pari Island, Thousand Islands Regency to build public awareness about the climate crisis and it is important for everyone to care and take part.

According to him, the increase in ecological disasters such as floods, landslides, flash floods, and coastal abrasion due to environmental damage and the climate crisis also needs to be a concern.

Uslaini emphasized that the Government must stop development and investment projects - which he said - were a solution to the climate crisis. However, the reality is getting worse.

One of the highlights of WALHI is the food estate project that triggers deforestation and land conversion, which actually experiences crop failure and crop failure due to incompatibility with cultivated land and commodities.

This, he said, was not to increase mitigation and adaptation efforts, but instead to contribute to carbon release and disrupt environmental stability.

He stated that programs for climate change mitigation such as FoLU Net Sink and the ambitious increase in NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution) achievements should align with government policies. Thus, forest and mangrove diversion for certain strategic development projects will not happen again.
