Not Rice Or Chili, House Contract Costs Are The Highest Contributor To Inflation In Malang City

MALANG - The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) for the City of Malang stated that the cost of renting houses in the City of Malang, East Java, contributed the highest to January 2023 inflation of 0.16 percent in the region.

Head of BPS Malang City Erny Fatma Setyoharini said the increase in house contract costs was recorded to have increased by 2.44 percent contributing to inflation of 0.16 percent.

"The cost or price of housing contracts has increased by 2.44 percent with a share of inflation of around 0.16 percent," said Erny as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, February 1.

Erny explained that other commodities driving inflation in Malang City were the increase in rice prices by 2.81 percent which contributed to inflation by 0.08 percent and the increase in cayenne pepper by 41.19 percent which contributed to 0.07 percent.

In addition, clove cigarettes experienced an increase of 4.19 percent, cooking oil increased by 3.44 percent, gold jewelry increased by 2.48 percent, garlic increased by 9.16 percent and train fares in that period increased by 5.38 percent.

"Meanwhile, for commodities that hampered inflation the most, it was the reduction in air transport fares, which fell 11.82 percent with a share of 0.20 percent," she said.

Then, the price of gasoline fell 1.89 percent contributing to a deflation of 0.11 percent, and eggs of purebred chickens fell 7.49 percent. Then, BPS Malang City also recorded a decrease in the price of chicken meat by 0.22 percent and the tariff for two-wheeled online motorcycle taxi vehicles fell by 3.79 percent.

It was noted that Malang City experienced the lowest inflation in East Java. While the highest inflation occurred in Sumenep Regency at 0.63 percent.

Year-on-year (YoY) inflation for Malang City was 6.06 percent, while month-to-month inflation was 0.15 percent.
