JAKARTA - Two leopard cubs, who lost their mother and are at risk of dying from cold and hunger, were rescued in the Primorsky Region in Russia's Far East, the local national park reported on Tuesday.

"Two far East leopard cubs, without their mother anywhere nearby, were found on a highway near the Land of the Leopard National Park in the Primorsky Region and rescued," the national park said in a statement.

"The species of endangered leopard cub who learned to walk recently was captured to be saved from death in the midst of frozen dew or under the wheel of the car," the national park continued, adding it was the first time a rare leopard was rescued at such a young age.

Experts say the leopard cubs may have lost their mother due to a deep layer of snow in the area, following a heavy snowstorm in mid-December.

Monitoring all the time was held as soon as leopard cubs were found in the hope their mothers could find them, but that never happened, and surveys in the area did not show any traces of an adult leopard.

"During the examination by veterinarians, the cubs showed the natural behavior of wild animals, and they had no external injuries. So far they have been quarantined, while being monitored all the time," according to the statement.

The national park estimates the female leopard may try to take her descendants to the place where the meat left them, but the family is separated by the Razdolnoye-Khasan highway.

It is known, the far Eastern leopard is the largest cat in the world and one of the rarest animals on the planet. According to recent research, more than 120 leopards inhabit Russia, namely in the southwest of the Primorsky Region and the small Chinese region bordering Russia.

The core of this large cat population is under the protection of the Land of the Leopard National Park which was founded outside Vladivostok in 2012.
