Mr. Bamsoet, Senior PDIP Politician Asks To Stop Talking About Postponement Of The 2024 General Election, Not Productive

JAKARTA - Senior politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Tubagus Hasanuddin, asked the Chairman of the MPR RI, Bambang Soesatyo (Bamsoet), to end an unproductive statement by saying that the implementation of the 2024 Simultaneous Elections needs to be taken into account. He considered that indirectly Bamsoet had again echoed the discourse on postponing elections. According to Hasanuddin, the discourse on extending the presidential term and postponing the 2024 General Election is a form of harassment against the constitution. Moreover, the process and stages of the election have started. "Never mind, there is no need to talk about postponing or resigning the election. Because it is unconstitutional and betrays political contracts with the people," Hasanuddin told reporters, Friday, December 9. The member of Commission I of the DPR explained a number of reasons why delaying elections was an act against the constitution. First, contrary to the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, Article 22E Paragraph (1) which reads, "Public elections are carried out directly, publicly, freely, confidentially, honestly, and fairly every five years". Second, contrary to Law No. 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections, Article 167 paragraph (1) which reads "The election is carried out every 5 (five) years". "I think it is very clear, if it is contrary to the constitution and the law, and the mechanism (delay of elections, ed) by the laws and regulations, it is better to just stop it," said Hasanuddin. "If left unchecked, the proposed postponement of the election is only an act that violates the constitution," he continued. Previously, MPR Chairman Bambang Soesatyo (Bamsoet) asked that the simultaneous elections in 2024 be taken into account. Because according to him, the momentum of the 2024 democratic party is not appropriate because the government is recuperating after the COVID-19 pandemic.
