How the Head of Detachment 88 Defines the 20 Years of the Bali Bombings 1

JAKARTA - Head of the Special Detachment (Densus) 88 Anti-Terror Police Inspector General Marthinus Hukom believes that Indonesia has a strong determination and spirit to be able to join hands to create peace without violence.

"To create a state of peace without violence, cross-sectoral cooperation is needed, both the government, security forces, community, and religious leaders, and the support of cooperation with the general public because without it all shared goals for realizing peace are difficult to achieve", said Marthinus while attending the "Harmony in Diversity" event in Nusa Dua, Bali, Wednesday, October 12, as reported by Antara.

As a manifestation of the determination of Densus 88 and the National Police, today all elements of society from various professions are invited to reflect and interpret the momentum of the commemoration of the Bali Bombing 1 which occurred on October 12, 2002.

The Bali Bombing 1 incident which occurred exactly 20 years ago at around 23.05 WITA in two places, namely the Sari Club and Paddy's Pub, killed 202 people and injured 209 people from 22 countries. Ten minutes later, a bomb exploded in the United States Consulate.

Marthinus said that to interpret the 20 years of the Bali 1 Bombing, there were three activities carried out, namely the release of hatchlings, turtles, and pigeons, sharing experiences from historical actors, including the families of the victims, the investigator team, and security forces, and praying together at the Bali Bombing Monument 1 or Ground Zero, Kuta, Badung, Bali.

"Through the release of hatchlings, turtles and the release of pigeons, I understand that there are three important values ​​from this activity, namely first is that we are taking care of life, hatchlings and doves symbolize life", he said in a message of peace in front of the invitees who were present at Merustika Beach, Badung, Bali.

The second meaning of releasing the animal, said Marthinus, is maintaining the value of freedom and the third is maintaining the value of balance because every human being has the right to live.

"Anyone, no other human being has the right to take the life of another. Talking about life, we are also talking about human dignity", said Marthinus.

According to him, sometimes terrorism is the result of people wanting to seek recognition of dignity, but forgetting other things that coincide with that dignity that every human being has the same right to be respected by others.

"When we feel that our dignity is higher (than others) then that is where superiority occurs and we will oppress others", added Marthinus.

Therefore, he stated that the second value which is not far from respect for human dignity is the value of freedom.

"We must be free to express all the values that we believe in as long as those values do not conflict with existing social values. Freedom is also limited by the freedom of others so when we talk about freedom, our freedom will stop right at the end. the freedom of others. That is the value in which we must live respecting freedom", he said.

The third value of the ceremony to release hatchlings and turtles at Merusaka Beach is to symbolize balance because releasing hatchlings and doves are a symbol of maintaining a balance between living things and the environment.

The Head of Densus added that the three values were related to the 20th anniversary of the Bali Bombing 1 because in this humanitarian tragedy someone took the life of another person for the recognition of one's own dignity.

"That's what we have to avoid so far so that by respecting life, respecting dignity, respecting balance, rest assured that we will live side by side in peace and security", he said.
