JAKARTA - Air Canada last Thursday announced that it will buy electric aircraft for the first time, by acquiring 30 battery-powered regional aircraft from Heart Aerospace, as many airlines switch to new technologies to reduce emissions and fuel costs.

Swedish-based hybrid Heart aircraft will have a capacity of up to 30 passengers and produce zero emissions when they enter service, which is expected in 2028, according to the airline in the release.

While citing Bloomberg, the planes are "far more cost-effective and can help these airlines thrive in regional markets," Chief Executive Officer, Michael Rous, aired in remarks at the US Chamber of Commerce's Global Aerospace Summit in Washington.

The ordered electric aircraft will be said to be capable of carrying 30 passengers as far as 200 kilometers (124 miles) in electric mode. Two turbo fuel generators could extend the range to 400 kilometers, Air Canada said in a statement. Meanwhile, the charging time for the aircraft is 30 to 50 minutes.

The Heart Aerospace, backed by Bill Gates's Breakthrough Energy Ventures LLC, uses a spare hybrid system "to secure reserve energy needs without sacrificing battery coverage," according to its website.

Fuel generators can be powered by low-carbon biofuels produced from raw materials such as corn.
