After Nancy Pelosi, It Was The Turn Of 8 Members Of The US Parliament Who Come And Stay In Taiwan

JAKARTA - Taiwan has another high-level public official from the United States. After previously Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, now the US parliamentary group arrived in Taiwan.

A delegation of US lawmakers arrived in Taiwan on Wednesday 7 September as quoted by The Strait Times. Their arrival was quiet because they were far from the frenzy.

The US embassy in Taiwan said eight lawmakers led by Stephanie Murphy -- a Democrat from Florida who sits on the House Armed Services Committee -- will be there until Friday 9 September.

"The delegation will meet with senior Taiwan leaders to discuss US-Taiwan relations, regional security, trade and investment, global supply chains, and other important issues of mutual interest," the embassy said.

China views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, rejecting the government's strong objections in Taipei.

China conducted war games last month near Taiwan following a trip to Taipei by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and has continued its military activities around the island since then.

Other US lawmakers have since come after Mrs. Pelosi's trip, as well as the governor of the US state of Arizona.

China has previously said the United States could increase its military deployment in the Taiwan Strait amid regional tensions.

Taiwan has confirmed that it will exercise its right to self-defense and counterattack if it interferes with its sovereignty. Many suspect it refers to the Chinese military. Beijing is indeed stepping up military activity near the island.

Taiwan's military shot down for the first time a civilian drone that entered its airspace near a small island located next to the Chinese city of Xiamen on Thursday September 1. And this is also proof of the promise to take strong action regarding security disturbances.
