JAKARTA - Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati stated that the peak of the 2022-2023 rainy season in Indonesian territory is predicted to generally occur in December 2022 and January 2023.

Dwikorita said there were 295 season zones (ZOM) or 42.2 percent for areas that experienced the peak of the rainy season in December-January.

"The conclusion is that the rainy season in 2022-2023 will come earlier than normal, with rain characteristics similar to or the same as the usual rainy season," said Dwikorita as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, August 31.

She said that when compared to the climatological average, the accumulation of rainy season rainfall for the 1991-2020 period, in general, the rainy season conditions in 2022-2023 are predicted to be normal or equal to the climatological average at 478 ZOM or most of the season zones, or 68.38 percent.

Then a total of 185 ZOM or 26.47 percent experienced above-normal rain conditions, namely the wet season, or higher rainfall than the climatological average.

"So this pleases attention for the 185 ZOM area on the map that is visible, or 26.47 percent of the season zone will experience a wetter rainy season, and 36 ZOM or 5.15 percent will experience below normal rainy conditions, or a drier rainy season or lower than the climatological average," she said.

In facing the rainy season in 2022-2023, BMKG urges all partners of ministries/agencies, local governments, and various parties as well as the community to remain vigilant in areas that enter the rainy season earlier or progress than normal.

Dwikorita explained that 46.5 percent of the total 699 ZOM in the rainy season has advanced compared to normal, namely parts of southern Sumatra Island, part of Java island, part of eastern Kalimantan island, part of Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, part of East Nusa Tenggara, part of Sulawesi Island, southern North Maluku, western part of Maluku and western and southern Papua.

With the rainy season arriving earlier, Dwikorita appealed that it could be used in the agricultural sector to start the planting season activities earlier

Then she recommended the need for increased vigilance and early anticipation for those who experienced a wetter rainy season, namely 185 ZOM or 26.5 percent of the area.

What must be watched out for are parts of Sumatra, parts of eastern Java, parts of East Kalimantan, parts of Bali, parts of West Nusa Tenggara, parts of northern Sulawesi, parts of West Papua, and parts of southern Papua.
