President Jokowi Affirms That Moving The Capital Is Not Just Moving Buildings

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo said that moving the capital city from DKI Jakarta to East Kalimantan was not just moving buildings or buildings, but was followed by changes in systems and mindsets. This was conveyed by President Jokowi when giving a briefing at the 2020 Leadership Meeting of the Ministry of Defense, TNI and Polri.

"What we are planning is not to move buildings, move locations but what we want is a change in mindset and work patterns," said Jokowi to the rapim participants at the Ministry of Defense's Office, Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat, Central Jakarta, Thursday, January 23.

In the new capital, the former governor of DKI Jakarta emphasized that there must be a new system and culture that prioritizes speed and no longer will the rich beat the poor.

Moreover, according to Jokowi, currently countries that are slow will be defeated by countries with a faster and more concise system. "The key is there, although (the country) is rich and large, if it is slow, it will be left behind by the faster ones," he said.

In addition to hoping that the new capital will adopt a speed system, Jokowi hopes that the transportation system of the transportation system in the city will be different from the existing transportation in DKI Jakarta. "In the new capital, all transportation will be completely electric and automatic," he said.

After determining the location and design, the government is now stepping on the gas to move the capital city. This is evidenced by the completion of the Draft Law (RUU) on relocating the capital city from DKI Jakarta to East Kalimantan.

"The draft bill for the capital city has been completed. Next week, God willing, we will convey it to the DPR," said President Joko Widodo to reporters at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, Friday, January 17.

The former governor of DKI Jakarta said that this bill would also regulate the formation of the Capital Authority Agency which is tasked with leading the development and transfer from Jakarta to the Penajem Passer Utara and Kutai Kertanegara areas.

Once formed, Jokowi said, this agency must be led by a person who understands the global economy, urban planning and has a network in the international world. "That's what you are looking for. It must be heavyweight," he said.

On that occasion, Jokowi explained that in accordance with the draft bill, a new capital city would not be built on top of a new province. If nothing changes when it is discussed at the DPR, according to him, this new capital city will enter the administrative area in the province of East Kalimantan.
