JAKARTA - The United States will provide the Czech Republic with eight attack and multi-function military helicopters from Bell, free of charge, the US Embassy in Prague said.
The Minister of Defense of the Czech Republic called the gift, in recognition of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) country's assistance to Ukraine.
The Czech Republic is looking for ways to speed up the modernization of their army from Soviet-era equipment, including their helicopter fleet, having donated excess hardware to Ukraine.
"This shows that our clear and steadfast stance since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine is bearing fruit," said Defense Minister Jana Cernochova, as reported by Reuters from the daily Hospodarske Noviny August 19.
"We have not only earned the respect of the Allies for our efforts in helping Ukraine. But we have also received their support in modernizing our army," he said.
The helicopters were delivered beyond the previous 12 orders. It was provided free of charge, except for transfer and upgrade fees, the US Embassy said on Twitter late Thursday.
"We are pleased to confirm the transfer of 6 AH-1Z Vipers and 2 UH-1Y Venoms under the Excess Defense Articles program," the embassy wrote.
It is known, with the transfer, the Czech Republic will have 10 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters and 10 UH-1Y Venom utility helicopters.
If nothing changes, the pre-ordered helicopter will arrive in 2023.
