Solution To Overcome Congestion In Medan, Bobby Nasution Supports Ministry Of Transportation And World Bank To Develop Bus Rapid Transit

MEDAN - The desire of the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) together with the World Bank (World Bank) to develop Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) mass transportation in the city of Medan was immediately welcomed by the Mayor of Medan Bobby Nasution.

This is because the development of road-based mass transportation is very supportive of the efforts of the Medan City Government in overcoming congestion.

"Surely this is an honor for the Medan City Government and the people of Medan City for the choice of the City of Medan in the development of this BRT mass transportation," said Bobby Nasution when receiving a visit from the World Bank Team, the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) and the Ministry of Transportation at Medan City Hall, quoted from a statement from the Public Relations of the Medan City Government, Monday, August 1.

Accompanied by the Head of the Medan City Transportation Department, Iswar Lubis, Bobby Nasution said that the Medan City Government is fully committed to supporting the activities of each project, both the North Sumatra Provincial Government and the Central Government. Moreover, he added, the development of BRT in Medan City is a program that can answer public complaints related to congestion.

“This (BRT development) is a solution to overcome the congestion that occurs in the city of Medan. In addition to supporting physical activities, we are also committed and help to socialize and at the same time invite people to use public transportation," said Bobby Nasution, hoping that BRT development would be carried out soon.

Previously, the Head of the Land and Road Transportation Sub-Directorate of Bappenas Dail Umamil Asri accompanied by the Head of the Mass Transportation Section of the Ministry of Transportation Hadi Setyabudi, expressed his gratitude for the support of the Medan City Government in the development of BRT mass transportation in the city of Medan. Dail Umamil hopes that the Medan City Government can support the implementation of the project later.

Dail Umamil said that the operation of the BRT will require four bus depots. Currently, he explained, the city of Medan only has two bus depots at Amplas Terminal and Pinang Baris Terminal. Therefore, he asked that the Medan City Government would provide two additional depots on Flamboyan Street and Gatot Subroto Street, to be exact next to Plaza Medan Fair.

“Hopefully the development of mass transportation will not only build infrastructure, but will have an overall impact such as the development of a better urban planning. Of course, this project is expected to provide benefits for the cities of Medan, Binjai, and Deli Serdang," Dail Umamil hoped.

Meanwhile, a representative from the World Bank, Senior Transport Specialist Nupur Gupta requested that the Medan City Government be able to socialize and publicize to the people of Medan City that in Medan City the BRT mass transportation development will be carried out.

"Of course, we hope that the Medan City Government can support the development of this transportation so that it can run smoothly," said Gupta.

Meanwhile, regarding the addition of two bus depots, Bobby Nasution said the Medan City Government would try to fulfill it in order to maximize the development of BRT in Medan City.

"We will try to talk about it technically later. What is clear is that the Medan City Government will make maximum efforts to support the development of mass transportation," explained Bobby Nasution.
