JAKARTA - The Directorate General of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health (Ditjen PKH) of the Ministry of Agriculture ensures that the supply of maize, especially for the feed industry and breeders, will remain available until March 2020.
"Based on the results of coordination with the Directorate General of Food Crops, we can say that corn planting carried out in the September-October 2019 period is ready to supply maize for the January-March 2020 period," said Director of Animal Feed at the Ministry of Agriculture Sri Widayati in Jakarta, Monday, January 20.
Sri explained this was based on the coordination that had been carried out with the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy, the Directorate General of Food Crops, the Food Security Agency, Pinsar, the National Corn Council and other relevant agencies to ensure the supply of corn for the feed industry and breeders.
Currently, the PKH Directorate General always monitors the absorption of local maize related to purchases, stocks, adequacy and prices by feed mills online or online using the SIMPAKAN application.
Based on the feed mill's report, maize stocks as of the end of December 2019 amounted to 852,424 tons and until the beginning of 2020 the price was stable.
"The available stock is sufficient to meet the needs of feed production for the next 45 days. And this stock will increase during the corn harvest in early February," said Sri.
During one year, continued Sri, there are usually three major corn harvests, namely in February-April, July-August and the third harvest in November-December.
Based on the Ministry of Agriculture's prognosis, corn production throughout 2020 is estimated to reach 24.16 million tons. This makes corn stocks safe throughout 2020.
Regarding feed production, in 2020, it is estimated that feed production will reach 21.53 million tonnes or grow by around 5 percent compared to feed production in 2019 (20.5 million tonnes).
The projection of corn demand in 2020 for feed mills is 8.5 million tons and for breeders is 3.48 million tons. Therefore, it is hoped that in 2020 Indonesia will have a surplus of maize.
In order to maintain the continuity of corn supply for the feed industry and independent breeders, Sri also said that the PKH Directorate General was building post-harvest support facilities such as silos and dryers in poultry farming centers in Central and East Java Provinces.
"It is hoped that the silo and dryer can be used to store and preserve corn longer, so that corn availability can be maintained," he said.
