JAKARTA - The World Medical Association (WMA) recognizes the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) as the sole organization of the medical profession that represents Indonesia because it has a long history of medicine in the country.
"IDI is an important member for us. Currently, we at WMA only recognize IDI as a medical professional organization as a representative of Indonesia," said WMA Secretary General Otman Kloiber as quoted from an IDI press release quoted by Antara, Wednesday, July 6.
Otman said that professional organizations in a country must be single because they involve standardization of medical ethics for the safety of patients and the public, as well as doctors.
IDI is a member of the WMA who has had a good relationship for 70 years, said Otman during the International Code of Medical Ethics (ICoME) which discussed the standardization of medical ethics and professionalism.
The Executive Board of IDI was appointed to host the conference which was attended by representatives of more than 100 WMA member countries since the beginning of this week. The conference, which was held in a hybrid manner, discussed medical ethical issues in today's world.
The conference was attended by a number of medical figures who played an important role in the preparation of the international medical code of ethics, including WMA Secretary General Dr Otmar Kloiber, WMA Treasurer Prof Ravindra who gave presentations on telemedicine medical ethics.
Also present was Dr. Ramin Parsa-Parsi who was the initiator of the revision of the Geneva declaration and the International Code of Medical Ethics. Also present was Prof. Urban Wiesing who was part of the initiator of the Declaration of Helsinki as a reference for all research ethics committees around the world, including Indonesia.
Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Dante Saksono Harbuwono, hopes that this activity can thoroughly explore the guidelines for medical ethics.
"Not only to protect us as doctors, but most importantly to ensure the best health care that can be provided to patients," he said.
Dante believes that this meeting will be an excellent opportunity to improve ethics, guidelines, and legal certainty, to be fair and efficient in the health sector.
As a member of the WMA, IDI was also involved in drafting the revision of the international medical code of ethics. The delegates from IDI were Dr. Pukovisa Prawiroharjo, Dr. Dr. Eka Ginanjar, and Prof. Dr. Dr. Sukman Tulus Putra.
The IDI delegation shared their experiences in Indonesia, including the Fatwa on Indonesian Medical Ethics and related regulations.
