Decreased Public Trust Level, Deputy Chairperson Of KPK: Impact Of Law Revision And COVID-19

JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Nurul Ghufron spoke about the decline in the level of public trust in his institution. According to him, this decline was caused by two things, namely the revision of the KPK Law and the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We believe that this belief has more impact on the influence of the process of amending Law 30 of 2002 (the old KPK Law, red) and also the influence of COVID-19," Ghufron said in a press conference that was broadcast online, Friday, October 23.

The COVID-19 pandemic, he continued, was one of the causes of the decline in the number of public trust in the KPK because many people felt difficult and depressed. Thus, they do not put their trust in public institutions.

"So it is not only the KPK but all institutions and not only in Indonesia but also in all countries whose governments are down. We pay attention to this and understand it," he said.

Even so, the Corruption Eradication Commission still appreciates a number of survey institutions for saying there is a decrease in the level of public trust. In the future, he said, the KPK would use this to carry out an evaluation.

"This is an evaluation for us. But this phenomenon is not only for us but in all state institutions both at home and abroad," he said.

It is known, from the results of a number of survey institutions, the level of public trust in this anti-graft agency decreased after the revision of the KPK Law.

The latest, based on the results of a survey released by Indonesian Political Indicators on Sunday, October 18, noted that the TNI ranks first as an institution that is trusted by the public with a percentage of 89.9 percent in September 2020.

In the next position, the level of trust in government institutions including the President of the Republic of Indonesia reached 85.8 percent, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) around 73.2 percent, the Police 72.9 percent, and the Attorney General's Office 71.3 percent.

The DPR RI holds the lowest level of public trust with a figure of 58.3 percent in the same month.
