BMKG Reminds Wave Height In Aceh Waters Can Reach 6 Meters

BANDA ACEH - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned that the wave height on the southwest coast of Aceh, from Friday to Sunday, May 8, was estimated to be between four and six meters.

"The sea wave height of up to six meters is very dangerous for ferry sailing activities", said Data and Information Coordinator for the Banda Aceh SIM Meteorological Station, Zakaria, quoted by Antara, Friday, May 6.

The potential for ocean waves with a height of four to six meters is in the southern coastal waters of Aceh, covering the districts of Southwest Aceh, South Aceh, Simeulue Island, and Aceh Singkil to Nias.

Zakaria said the sea wave height in the southern waters of Aceh is expected to reach its peak on Sunday, May 8 starting on Friday today.

In addition to endangering shipping activities, the high sea waves are also very dangerous for the safety of fishermen who will look for fish on the high seas, he said.

"For fishermen who want to go to sea, we recommend looking for fish around the coast which is not far from the mainland. Because going to the open sea is very dangerous", added Zakaria.

Meanwhile, the sea wave heights for the west coast of Aceh including West Aceh, Nagan Raya, and Aceh Jaya are at a moderate level, which is in the range of 1.5 meters to 2.5 meters.

However, for the waters of Sabang, Banda Aceh, and Aceh Besar, so far it is still normal in the range of 0.5 meters to 1.2 meters.

"The safer ones are on the east coast of Aceh, from Pidie to Aceh Tamiang. The height of the waves is only around 0.5 meters to 1 meter", said Zakaria.

Even though it is safe, he asked fishermen to stay alert when going to the sea because when they are on the high seas, fishermen's conditions are also classified as dangerous if they are not careful.
