JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo inaugurated Trunojoyo Airport in Sumenep Regency, East Java, as an effort to improve connectivity for the people of Madura and around Madura Island.

The inauguration was marked by the signing of an inscription by President Jokowi at Trunojoyo Airport, Sumenep, Wednesday, April 20.

"Thank God, Trunojoyo Airport in Sumenep Regency, Madura, has been completed and is ready to be used to serve the transportation needs of the people on Madura Island and other islands around Madura," President Jokowi said at the inauguration of Trunojoyo Airport which was monitored virtually.

The President explained that this airport will play an important role in increasing connectivity, facilitating connectivity with small islands around Madura, as well as opening the isolation of remote islands around Madura Island.

With the operation of Trunojoyo Airport, the travel time from the islands around Madura to Surabaya can be reduced to only one hour by plane.

Previously by ship, the people around Madura had to travel for days, said the President.

On the same occasion, Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi explained that Trunojoyo Airport is located on an area of 34 hectares.

The airport, which has been under construction since 1979, was completed and developed into an airport with a runway length of 1.600 meters and an airport building with an area of 3.600 meters.

Trunojoyo Airport has previously served a number of routes, namely Sumenep-Madura, Sumenep-Bawean, Sumenep-Pagerungan and Sumenep-Banyuwangi.
