YOGYAKARTA - The Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, hopes that parents will build awareness together to prevent cases of street crime that are still appearing in their area.

"Indeed, we can't if it's the people themselves, the parents themselves can't control their children. We usually only have hope," said Sultan HB X at the Kepatihan Complex, Yogyakarta, Antara, Monday, April 4.

According to the Sultan, without the awareness of parents, it is difficult for his party to apply coercive rules to deal with crime or often called klitih, which is usually done by teenagers.

"If we do something that is coercive in nature, it will also violate the law," said Ngarsa Dalem as Sultan HB X is called.

Various development efforts, according to the Sultan, have been carried out to deal with klitih perpetrators, especially minors. However, always face challenges in the field.

In 2021, the Yogyakarta Regional Government has also compiled a program for fostering minors who are in conflict with the law and have diversion status, particularly in relation to street crime cases.

"Yes, now such a thing is possible or not? We are still looking for a hook for the rule. The problem is that if there is no hook, you can't, you can't even make a governor's regulation (governor regulation)," said the Sultan.

For the Sultan, the street crime incident in Yogyakarta on Sunday morning that killed a student must be prosecuted even if the perpetrator is a minor.

"In my opinion, it's a violation of the law, not klitih. It's just child delinquency, but it's gone too far," said the King of the Yogyakarta Palace.

Previously, a student in the Special Region of Yogyakarta died after being hit by a sharp object by a street criminal on Jalan Gedongkuning, Yogyakarta City, Sunday morning yesterday.

The victim was rushed to the Hardjolukito Hospital by an officer from the Directorate of Sabhara Polda DIY who was on patrol. However, his life could not be saved.

The DIY Police are still pursuing and investigating the identities of the perpetrators by asking witnesses for statements.

"We are still investigating the crime scene. We have carried out the crime scene many times and are looking for more witnesses," said Director of the Criminal Investigation Department of the DIY Regional Police, Kombes Ade Ary Syam Indradi.
