JAKARTA - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries through the Ternate Fish Quarantine, Quality Control, and Fishery Products Safety Station (BKIPM), destroyed 121.9 kilograms of fishery commodities exposed to e Coli bacteria.

"Some of the samples tested have been contaminated with Escherichia coli bacteria. This can cause stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting", said Head of BKIPM Ternate, Arsal Azis, quoted by Antara on Wednesday, February 16.

Arsal Azis explained that a number of these commodities consisted of, among others, 30 kg of Lanjaman Shark (Carcharhinus Falciformis), based on the identification report of the Workshop for Coastal and Marine Resources Management (LPSPL) Sorong Ternate Work Unit, which will be transported from the Obi area to Bitung on October 1, 2021.

Then, he continued, 90 kg of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus Pelamis) were seized on December 31, 2021, and 1.95 kg of sea cucumbers (Holothuria Nobilis) were seized on January 21, 2022.

Arsal said security was carried out because the delivery of these commodities was not equipped with the required documents, namely Health Certificate (HC) from the area of origin and other supporting documents.

"After a clinical examination, we will conduct a laboratory examination to determine the quality of the carrier media", he said.

In addition, he said, laboratory testing was also carried out using a sampling method, namely testing several fish that represented the condition of other fish.

The test parameters carried out were organoleptic with the sensory method which was the basic test, microbiological quality testing, namely Total Plate Number (ALT), Escherichia coli, and Salmonella.

It is stated that these three microbiological quality test parameters have been accredited to SNI ISO/IEC 17025: 2017 by the National Accreditation Committee (KAN), which means the laboratory test results can be trusted and are valid both nationally and internationally.

Based on this finding, the Ternate BKIPM then destroyed it by burning it on Tuesday, February 15.

Arsal said that this quarantine action in the form of extermination was by Law Number 21 of 2019 concerning Animal, Fish and Plant Quarantine Article 48 paragraph 1 point (a) which explains that the destruction is carried out if the carrier media is imported into or imported from one area to another in the Territory of the Republic of Indonesia, after being unloaded from the transportation means and carrying out clinical and laboratory examinations, it turns out to be damaged/rotten, quarantine measures must be taken, namely destruction.

"This activity of destroying fishery commodities aims to provide a warning so that similar incidents do not happen again", said Arsal.

Previously, the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, asked BKIPM to always guide business actors from upstream to downstream. This is to ensure that the products produced are of guaranteed quality and quality so that they are safe for public consumption.
