Differences In Proposed Campaign Period For KPU, Government And DPR, How Long Is The Ideal?

JAKARTA - Commission II of the House of Representatives, the Government, and the Election Organizers have agreed on a schedule for the election to be held on February 14, 2024.

However, the discussion on the election will still be rescheduled for another meeting because there are some differences of opinion between the government and the KPU. One of them is related to the length of the campaign period.

The General Election Commission (KPU) of the Republic of Indonesia proposes a campaign period of 120 days, starting from October 14, 2023, to February 10, 2024, Monday, January 24.

According to Ilham, the campaign period is closely related to election logistics. The faster the logistics procurement, the campaign time will also be adjusted to be shortened.

Meanwhile, the government through the Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian, assessed that the proposed KPU campaign period was too long. Tito suggested that the campaign period be carried out for 3 months.

"Then regarding the campaign period proposed by the KPU for 120 days, we think that a maximum of 90 days or 3 months is sufficient, we think," said Tito in a working meeting with Commission II of the DPR, Monday, January 24.

According to him, with a short campaign period, will minimize conflict between the supporters of the candidate so that there is no division in society. "Society is also not long divided, and we think with the existence of media communication technology and social media fingers, we think this is enough time," he continued.

Meanwhile, the DPR wants the campaign period to be less than 90 days. Deputy Chairman of Commission II of the House of Representatives, Saan Mustofa explained, the majority of members and the government asked for a shortened campaign period.

"So a maximum of 90 days if possible, 75 days. Now, if it's 75 days then those related to the program, what stages and programs and related to DCT will be carried out in November, for the matter of DCT. The campaign period starts on November 26. If it is in accordance with The government's proposal for the campaign period will be 11 November 2023-10 February 2024," he explained.

Therefore, the factions in Commission II of the DPR will explore it and reschedule the meeting to determine the ideal stage and period of the campaign. "That's what we will explore later. In order for the KPU to re-simulate related to the program stages and schedules, members of Commission II of the DPR have asked for it," continued Saan.

Previously, the DPR, the Government, and the Indonesian KPU had agreed on an election schedule for February 14, 2024. Meanwhile, the simultaneous regional elections were held on November 27, 2024.
