MATARAM - The Mataram City Government, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province has opened a sign language training class for sub-district officials throughout the Selaparang sub-district. This training is an effort to improve services for people with disabilities.
"Our sub-district service staff train sign language to anticipate future developments because people with disabilities, especially people who are deaf and speech-impaired can independently manage various documents in the kelurahan," said Selaparang Sub-district Head of Mataram City Zulkarwin in Mataram, Antara, Thursday, January 20.
He said the opening of the sign language training class was coupled with the declaration of the Selaparang Inclusion District on Wednesday. The number of village officials who took the sign language class was 10 people, consisting of nine representatives from nine sub-districts in Selaparang District and one representative from the sub-district.
The sign language class is targeted for 10 meetings, in collaboration with the Harapan Baru Lombok Foundation. "So this activity does not burden the regional budget," he said.
On the other hand, Zulkarwain said, the declaration of Selaparang Inclusion Sub-district became an umbrella for carrying out various activities in an effort to protect and fulfill the rights of persons with disabilities in Mataram City.
Besides that, it is a tangible manifestation of the Mataram City Government's desire to embrace, protect, and involve all levels of society in development programs, including people with disabilities.
"In Karang Baru Village, we have started by making access for wheelchairs for people with disabilities," he said.
In addition to providing sign language training, in the future Selaparang District will provide English language training, along with many international scale activities being held in this area.
"With the upcoming MotoGP event, Lombok Island is getting a lot of lyrics. Therefore, we must also prepare ourselves," he said.
Zulkarwin said, by providing English language training, he hopes that when there are foreign guests who want to buy Sate Rembige, or travel to the Islamic Center and Udayana, at least the public can communicate.
"That is a form of our hospitality to our guests," he said.
Meanwhile, English language training for entrepreneurs is also very important to expand market share and be able to serve customers from abroad.
Selaparang Inclusion District has also prepared an English language training program for academic concepts for residents who want to continue their education to higher education or take scholarships abroad.
"We can assist with scholarship programs for undergraduate students abroad and even get scholarships from institutions that work with us," he said.
