Former Investigator Sentenced To 11 Years In Prison, KPK Conducts Analysis To Prepare Next Steps

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) does not want to take hasty steps over the decision handed down by the Jakarta Corruption Court against its former investigator, Stepanus Robin Pattuju.

Acting KPK Spokesperson for Enforcement, Ali Fikri, said that his party would still analyze the decision of the panel of judges which was read out on Wednesday, January 12 yesterday.

"The team of prosecutors will analyze the results of the verdict," Ali told reporters, Thursday, January 13.

As for the decision, the panel of judges sentenced Stepanus to 11 years in prison plus a fine of Rp500 million, subsidiary to 6 months in prison. In addition, he had to pay replacement money of Rp2,322,577,000.

This sentence was given because Stepanus and his colleague, advocate Maskur Husain, were proven to have received bribes of Rp11.025 billion and US$36 thousand or around Rp513 million, bringing the total to Rp11.5 billion. The money is related to the management of five cases of alleged corruption at the KPK.

Ali said the verdict needed to be analyzed further. Moreover, this verdict is one year lighter than the demands submitted by the public prosecutor (JPU).

"Analysis of the results of the decision to prepare for the next step," he said.

As previously reported, Stepanus, Maskur Husain, and the KPK prosecutors had seven days to think about it to take the next step in the form of an appeal.

In the trial, five corruption cases were mentioned which resulted in the receipt of money by Stepanus.

First, both of them were deemed proven to have received bribes from former Tanjungbalai Mayor M Syahrial in the amount of Rp1,695 billion to the investigation stage.

The money is given in stages in November 2020-April 2021 by transfer to the account of Riefka Amalia, Stepanus' sister, in the amount of Rp1.275 billion; transfer to Maskur account on 22 December 2020 Rp200 million; cash distribution of Rp10 million in March 2021 and cash distribution of Rp210 million on December 25, 2020.

The money worth Rp1.695 billion was divided into two, namely Rp490 million for Stepanus and Rp1.205 billion for Maskur Husain.

In the second case, Stepanus and Maskur received Rp3,099,887,000 and US$36 thousand (approximately Rp513.29 million) or a total of Rp3,613 billion from former Deputy Speaker of the DPR from the Golkar Party faction Azis Syamsudin and former Deputy Chairperson of PP Youth Forces Golkar Party (AMPG) Aliza Gunado related to the KPK investigation in Central Lampung.

Stepanus then received a down payment of Rp100 million and Maskur Husain received an amount of Rp200 million via transfer to Azis Syamsudin's account on August 3 and 5, 2020; in the amount of US$100 thousand on August 5, 2020, which Stepanus received directly from Azis at Azis' official residence; and in August 2020 - March 2021 in the amount of 171,900 Singapore dollars.

Furthermore, the money was divided so that Stepanus received Rp799,887,000, while Maskur Husain received Rp2.3 billion and US$ 36 thousand.

In the third case, Stepanus and Maskur received Rp507.39 million from the inactive Mayor of Cimahi, Ajay Muhammad Priatna, who was not involved in the investigation of social assistance cases in Bandung regency, Bandung city, and Cimahi city.

The money was handed over on October 15, 2021, by Ajay's aide named Evodie Dimas Sugandy, which amounted to Rp387.39 million. Then Robin again received Rp20 million from Ajay on October 24, 2020, bringing the total to Rp507.39 million.

The money was then divided into two, namely Stepanus received Rp82.39 million while Maskur Husain received Rp425 million.

In the fourth case, Stepanus and Maskur received Rp525 million from Usman Effendi, a convict in the corruption case of land use rights in Tenjojaya who is currently serving a 3 year prison sentence.

Starting October 6, 2020-19 April 2021, Usman Effendi transferred money to Riefka Amalia's BCA account with a total amount of Rp525 million. The money is divided in half with Robin getting Rp252.5 million while Maskur gets Rp272.5 million.

In the fifth case, Stepanus and Maskur received Rp5,197,800,000 from the former Kutai Kartanegara Regent Rita Widyasari.

The money was then distributed, with details of Stepanus getting Rp697.8 million and Maskur Husain getting Rp4.5 billion.
