Kodim 1702/JWJ Steps In To Help Jayawijaya Police Defuse Conflict Between Two Tribes In Wamena

JAKARTA - A total of 1 SSK TNI personnel from Kodim 1702/Jayawijaya and 1 SSK from Infantry Battalion 756/WMS have been alerted to assist the Jayawijaya Police in quelling clashes between tribes, the Lanny Jaya tribe and the Nduga Tribe in Wouma District, Jayawijaya Regency that occurred on Sunday 9 January yesterday.

In a written statement, Tuesday, January 11, Dandim 1702/Jayawijaya Lt. Col. Inf. Budi Arif Situmeang went down directly with his soldiers to the tribal war area in Wouma District. They came to defuse, block and dispel mass groups to prevent the expansion of tribal wars in Jayawijaya Regency.

Clashes occurred between two groups of people from the Lanny Jaya Tribe and the Nduga Tribe community in Wouma District, Jayawijaya Regency, triggered by allegations of murder by the Lanny Jaya community against the Nduga community on behalf of Yonas Kelnea (48). The victim was allegedly killed due to family problems.

"Clashes broke out again. The two community groups attacked each other using traditional weapons of war. However, the TNI and the Police who were on standby managed to disperse the crowd," he said.

As a result of the clashes, one victim died, 22 people were injured, 4 honai units caught fire, 35 houses burned down, 2 cars and 4 motorbikes caught fire.

Currently, security forces from Kodim 1702/JWY, Infantry Battalion 756/WMS and Jayawijaya Police continue to be on standby at the crime scene and are trying to urge both parties to exercise restraint.

Approaches with community leaders from each conflicting group have also been carried out. Tribal chiefs & warlords have also been invited to defuse their groups.
