JAKARTA - The price of red chili peppers ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations is getting hotter. Unmitigated, in traditional markets, the price of red cayenne pepper penetrates IDR 95 thousand per kilogram.

"For now, the price of chili that has increased is red cayenne, from the previous selling price of IDR 50 thousand, now it has increased to IDR 95 thousand per kilo", said Ihsan (25) red chili trader at Pasar Senen Blok VI, Senen, Central Jakarta, Monday, December 20.

The significant increase only occurred in the price of red cayenne pepper. For other types of chili, there is an increase but not as high as the price of red chili.

"For red chilies, it usually increases slightly, from the initial price of IDR 30,000 to IDR 40 per kilo. For green cayenne, it is not much different, from IDR 40,000 to IDR 50 per kilo", he said.

Ihsan admitted that the increase in chili prices in the market will indirectly have an impact on rising prices for other types of kitchen spices, such as tomatoes, onions, and garlic.

"If the price of chili goes up, let alone the rainy season. Prices of other ingredients or spices will also go up", he said.

Ihsan said that the previous price of tomatoes was IDR 6 thousand per kilo and now it has increased to IDR 10 thousand.

"If the onion sold for IDR 22 thousand yesterday, it has gone up, so it is selling at IDR 30 thousand per kilo. For garlic, the price is the same as an onion", he said.

Ihsan said that the increase in the price of red cayenne pepper was due to the large number of red cayenne pepper farmers who failed to harvest. So the supply is reduced and there is a shortage.

"The increase in prices like chilies or onions is not just because they want Christmas or New Year's Eve", he said.
