BRIN Technology Turns Wood Waste Into Environmentally Friendly Composite Products

JAKARTA - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has developed a technology for processing wood waste into environmentally friendly composite products in the form of export quality chip block pallets (CBP).

"The technology for utilizing wood waste for environmentally friendly composite products in the form of chip block pallets can be a national solution model for the problem of national lignocellulosic biomass waste, which is very abundant in Indonesia," said BRIN Deputy for Research and Innovation Utilization Mego Pinandito, quoted by Antara, Thursday, December 16. .

According to CBP inventor Sukma Surya K, CBP is a composite product that is environmentally friendly because it is free from formaldehyde emissions that are harmful to health and its raw materials are wood industry waste.

In addition, he said, CBP has superior load-bearing strength, high nail resistance, high resistance, and simple installation method.

Mego said the increase in the selling value of CBP's products is estimated at 150 to 250 US dollars per cubic meter.

The commercialization of CBP products from lignocellulosic biomass waste, according to him, can reduce dependence on CBP products imported from China, create new jobs, and bring solutions to environmental problems.

BRIN researchers are trying to increase the added value of wood industrial waste because the selling price of wood industrial waste in the market is only around Rp. 200 per sack. Wood industry waste is usually used as fuel in tofu factories.

The Head of BRIN's Life Sciences Research Organization, Iman Hidayat, said the CBP production technology was a form of BRIN's quick response in assisting the development of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

In 2020 representatives from CV Kibti Furniture visited BRIN to convey the problem of wood industry biomass waste in the Jepara area and its potential use for international standard CBP production.

Center of Excellence for Lignocellulosic Science and Technology The BRIN Center for Biomaterials Research responded by developing a CBP prototype that was tailored to the needs of the industry.

BRIN in 2021 disbursed funding to develop and accelerate the commercialization of composite pallet foot cushion products. The product has been tested and accepted by the export market.
