Flores Sea Earthquake Update: 230 Houses In Selayar, South Sulawesi, Were Heavily Damaged

JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) noted that as many as 230 houses in Selayar Regency, South Sulawesi were heavily damaged after an earthquake that rocked the Flores Sea.

"A total of 230 houses in Selayar Regency, South Sulawesi, were damaged after an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 occurred in the Flores area", said Head of BNPB Disaster Information and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, in his statement, Tuesday, December 14.

In addition, said Abdul Muhari, one school building unit, two places of worship, and one village head office were also affected by the earthquake centered at 7.95 latitudes and 122.24 east longitude.

Based on a visual report obtained from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Selayar Regency, the damage was monitored from concrete fences, walls to roofs of residents' houses.

The 7.4 magnitude earthquake affected several provinces such as South Sulawesi, East Nusa Tenggara, and Southeast Sulawesi.

"The M 7.4 earthquake was felt and had an impact in three provinces covering East Nusa Tenggara Province, namely Regencies, East Flores, Sikka Regency, Lembata Regency, Manggarai Regency, Nagekeo Regency, Selayar Islands Regency, Buton Regency, Wakatobi Regency, Sabu Raijua Regency, Bau Bau City, and West Manggarai Regency", explained Abdul Muhari.

"Then Makassar City and Selayar Regency in South Sulawesi Province and Muna Regency in Southeast Sulawesi", he continued.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) previously released a tsunami early warning from the M 7.4 earthquake, but now the warning has ended.

In addition, BMKG recorded at least five aftershocks that occurred after the M 7.4 earthquake with details; M 5.6 at 10.41 West Indonesia Time at 7.81 South Latitude and 122.34 East Longitude, M 5.5 at 10.47 West Time at 7.55 South Latitude and 121.75 East Longitude, M 5.0 at 12.46 West Time at 7.45 South Latitude and 121.38 East Longitude, M 5.4 at 15.31 West Time at 7.59 South Latitude and 122.40 BT and M 5.2 at 15:57 WIB at 7.70 South Latitude and 122.40 East Longitude.
